I don't know if you're the kinda guy for parties, but my siblings are throwing a birthday party on October 1st in Nonah, and uh, if you wanted to come, there ought to be a bunch of people. And good food. And cake, I guess.

That's probably not selling it really well, huh.

Sellin' it pretty damn well as far as I'm concerned, Hoss.

I'd be happy to come.

You need anyone to help with the food?

Oh, thank god.

And we might just order something to make it easier, but maybe. You a chef?

Wouldn't go so far as to say that, but I like t' cook.

Just makes this place feel more homey, I 'spose.

Should I be gettin' ya'll presents?

Nah. We're specifying that presents aren't required. There are too many of us, and we're not really used to receiving any anyway. Just people being there is a gift enough.

The cakes are already covered, but we can take up position in the kitchen to make some snacks or something. It's a... really big kitchen.

[ and Luther is, natch, absolutely gonna be one of those people who hides from the guests in the kitchen with a friend shhhh ]

So you all celebrate your birthday at the same time?

That's gotta be a party.

Yeah, we're all adopted, but all born on the same day. It's a thing.

First time we've ever thrown a birthday together, though. First time I've really celebrated mine properly, either.

You tellin' me that not only is this a birthday you gotta share with all your siblings, but that you ain't even gotten to celebrate yours ever before?

And I ain't even 'sposed to bring a present?

I mean, yeah. It's not required. Birthdays just used to mean press conferences and maybe a new combat suit.

[ But then he remembers a time he did save and scrape up his money and go outside the rules to get one of the others a present, just because it mattered, so-- ]

If it doesn't feel right to you, though, then obviously I wouldn't reject a token gift or anything. How do people celebrate it where you're from?

Well sure it ain't required, but that ain't the point.

Back home? Big parties, usually. My family was all for throwin' a big party for pretty much any reason. Everyone would come. Siblings, cousins, second cousins, the whole shebang.

Been a while since I actually got to go to one, but.

On the Roci mostly Amos and I just go get drinks.

Yeah, I'm not exactly one for crowds, so if this wasn't happening I'd probably just grab someone for a quiet drink. We'll see how it goes. I apologize in advance if anyone's... well, I dunno, you'll see.

Sounds like you had a pretty big clan. Was there ever any drama getting everyone together like that?

See now you're just startin' to sound ominous, partner. We can always just go for a drink instead, if you'd like.

But I think a party might be a good time. Who knows, you might even enjoy it.

Big families are kinda the point, on Mars. Population deficit, right? It's part of our civic duty to have as many kids as possible.

Ha. Yeah, sorry. But it's been pointed out to me that I need to 1) loosen up, and 2) that there's a first time for everything, so I'm giving it a shot. I'd never be able to live it down if I let some socialization scare me away.

And jeez. I guess that's a relief, though, that it's a universal problem no matter what? Just a side-effect of so many personalities in one room, probably, and when they've all been stuck together by circumstance.

Family is family. There's always gonna be issues - even with the family you choose, rather than the ones you get given - but the whole point is you love 'em anyway, right?

I'm sure it'll be alright. And if it gets too rough, well, you make an appearance, and then we wander off to go find a drink and you can blame it on me, after.
